Hi,
For this session I didn't put much emphasis on writing mathematical notation in Moodle since most definitions were possible using words alone. However a few students asked about entering mathematics so I introduced them to the basics of using TeX notation in Moodle (http://docs.moodle.org/en/TeX_filter). I can't say they found it easy but I was encouraged - I believe a lesson or homework dedicated to learning some simple TeX code would be very beneficial. I'm considering doing this at the start of each academic year - I believe mathematical notation is a barrier to students using online forums to discuss maths (such as the excellent AskNrich: http://nrich.maths.org/discus/messages/board-topics.html).

Did the students had trouble with the mathematical notation? How did they solve them? could you give more details.
